Pavones is a surfer’s paradise. It is famous for the second longest left point break in the world which breaks for over 1 km and rides can last for over 2 minutes. There are also several other amazing waves in the area. It is located in the very southern part of Costa Rica on the Gulfo Dulce, a tropical deep water fjord that is home to many species of fish as well as dolphins and one of the places that the humpback whales come every year to mate and have their babies. Most of the Gulfo Dulce is only accessible by boat and the land is protected in various national parks. Pavones is a small sleepy town that wakes up when there is swell. When there are no waves the ocean is very calm and great for fishing and paddle boarding but when the swell arrives locals and tourists flock to the tiny town to try and catch the longest waves of their lives. The town is very small with a soccer field and a handful of restaurants, bars, and small hotels. If you drive 10 min south of Pavones there is an even smaller town called Punta Banco and that is where the road ends and past that it is just rainforest all the way to Panama. It is a 1 hour drive to the town of Golfito where you will find a duty free zone and also a marina for fishing and it is also a 1 hour drive to Paso Canoas, the border town where you can go shopping and also enter Panama. The Pavones area has a lot of rainforest and a lot of wildlife. Because of its remote location it is still very undeveloped and has that real Costa Rica vibe.
